When I first read about the project, I was intrigued by the idea of using everyday sounds to create something artistic. I began by brainstorming different sounds I could record from my daily life. I thought about the sounds of nature, like birds chirping, and also the sounds of urban life, like traffic or people talking.
I decided to record the sound of my morning routine, from the sound of turing on my lamp right away then reaching for my water bottle and the "pop" it makes and the ice inside. I also recorded the sound of me typing as I usually type emails in the morning and zipping my coat to walk to class.
After recording my sounds, I titled each one and uploaded them to the shared folder on Google Drive. Listening to the sounds that others had uploaded, I was struck by the variety of noises and the different stories they seemed to tell.
For my composition, I want to focus on using a mix of sounds that I felt represented different aspects of my life and daily routine. I really like the idea of this project as it is a reminder of how even the most mundane sounds can be transformed into something beautiful through art and combining things together.
After watching the John Cage videos, I was inspired by the idea of using everyday sounds as music. I realized that the key to this project was not just the individual sounds themselves, but also the way they were arranged and presented. I wanted to create a composition that flowed seamlessly from one sound to the next, creating a sort of musical narrative of my daily life. I was trying to think of specific sounds that would flow well together. However, I found that it might be difficult to do this so I focused on sound that I experience within a time frame, like my morning routine and waking up as this is what gets my brain started right away anyways.
