The article “Re-Viewing Visual Literacy in the "Bain d' Images" Era” by Maria D. Avgerinou offers an interesting point of view of Visual Literacy and the integration of it in modern day learning. One may believe that since the world is full of images and visual simulation, children and those taking it in on a constant basis would naturally understand these concepts portrayed in VL (visual literacies). However, as stated in the article, just because we live in world where images are rich in quantity does not mean that people “naturally possess sophisticated visual literacy skills, just as continually listening to an iPod does not teach a person to critically analyze or create music (Avgerinou 29). I agree with the argument made in the article that some sort of VL teaching should be implemented, not only because it will be and is a usefull skill to develop rather than because it is the new norm in a culture that really does value the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”. It is really interesting when you break down VL and the importance that it has. In the article Avgerinou mentions that “What we select and look at in this field of vision is what for the individual becomes reality” which I completely agree with. What we consume into our lives becomes what we think about and in turn what we live, consciously and subconsciously. Since there is so much information and so many sources to obtain that information, learning to decipher, create, and execute is crucial to keep up with what the next era of media is coming to. It is exciting because barriers are being expanded and shaped the way that creators and consumers want them to be. This learning can start as a student but with the rapid flow of information, anyone is equipped to learn and develop these skills!
